Here again the full co-operation of all countries is needed, and although much and valuable material has been sent to the Committee in the Annual Reports and otherwise, the Committee is still without the statistics of the production of the drugs in Franco and Holland, and a number of countries have failed to supply the Committee with the estimates of the amount of the drugs required for the internal consumption of their countries, 28 recommended by the third resolution of the ssembly last year. The failure to supply this information creates a great difficulty for the Advisory Committeo.
East.
A few words must be said as to the position in the Far
It
It is satisfactory to note that the efforts made to stop the illicit traffic in the drugs in this part of the world has not been without result and that large seizures have been made by the authorities. The situation appears, however, to remain very grave. In China, the cultivation and sale of opium have increased and it would appear from the latest reports
The that they are now being carried on to an enormous extent. emuggling of the manufce tured drugs also continues, in spite of the measures taken by the Japanese and other Govern ents. will be seen from the fifth report of the Advisory Committee that new and more stringent regulations have been brought into force in Japan and we may perhaps express a hope that the Japanese Government will be able, oven in the terrible catastrophe which has fallen upon that country, to maintain It does the efforts which it has begun to stop this evil. not appear whether tho co-operation between the Japanese and Chinese authorities which was recommendeû last year by the Advisory Committce (with the approval of the Council 21.7.1922) has yet been established and the Commission would be glad no doubt to hear from the representatives of China and Jangn whether anything has yet boen done in this direction.
